Department of Popular Music

In 1964, at the G. Musicescu Institute of Arts (now the Academy of Music, Theatre and Fine Arts), the Department of Folk Instruments was founded, headed by Master Vasile Vilinciuc. From 1970 to 2011 the department was led by Vasile Crăciun, Vilinciuc’s student. Since 2012 the head of the department has been Master Petre Neamțu. In 2013, the Department of Folk Instruments was reorganized into the Department of Folk Music, with two study programs: Folk Instruments and Folk Singing. From 2018, the leadership of the Department of Folk Music was taken over by Vitalie Grib.

Over nearly five decades, the Department trained and instructed numerous performers on various instruments: violin, kobza, double bass, accordion, trumpet, clarinet, nai (pan flute), and tsimbal (hammered dulcimer). Students in these specialties become familiar with different styles of interpretation, focusing on combining the principles of method from the classical school of interpretation with those of the traditional one.

Among the program graduates we name: V. Crăciun, Gh. Platon, P. Neamțu, N. Botgros, V. Luță, A. Șura, N. Comendant, I. Iachimciuc, V. Cașcaval, V. Rusu, V. Iovu, V. and V. Advahov, M. Bunea, and others.
