
In 1984, the Government of the Republic of Moldova decided to found the Department of Plastic Arts within the Faculty of Dramatic Arts of the former Institute of Arts of Moldova. The first head of the department was appointed as Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences Victor Simonenco, a special guest from the Republic of Belarus. Together with the initial professors of the department, among whom were notable names in Bessarabian visual arts: Alexei Colîbneac, Ilie Bogdesco, Ion Serbinov, Vlad Bolboceanu, Grigorie Bosenco, Andrei Negură, Urman Natalia, and others, who created the scientific-methodical structure and laid the foundations for the future Faculty of Plastic Arts. Initially, the department comprised five chairs: Decorative Arts, Fashion Design, Interior Design, Artistic Tapestry, and Graphic Design. Over the years the department underwent changes and conceptual restructurings so that, from 1990 onward, it became an independent Faculty within the State Institute of Arts, currently the Moldova State Academy of Music, Theatre and Plastic Arts. In 1989, the Painting Chair was formed, and in 2002, within this chair, the Mural Painting Department was established. From the founding of the Faculty to the present, more than 1,500 students have attended its courses. The Faculty of Plastic Arts has gained distinctive prestige in the local artistic and academic milieu, through the dedication and devotion of its professors, as well as through the notable achievements of some alumni who have become reference names in the plastic arts of the Republic of Moldova.
Currently, within the Faculty of Plastic Arts, there are seven chairs: Painting (the Mural Painting Chair, Sculpture), Graphic Design, Decorative Arts (Ceramics and artistic metalworking, Artistic Tapestry, Restoration of works of art), Fashion Design, Interior Design, and the Visual Language Chair (History and Theory of Plastic Arts). The teaching staff of the faculty consists of experienced professors, renowned figures in national culture and the arts: Iurie Canașin, People’s Artist, Ion Serbinov, Master of Art, Alexei Colîbneac, Master of Art, Emil Childescu, People’s Artist, Iurie Matei, People’s Artist, Sergiu Fusu, Master of Art, Ghenadie Tîciuc, Master of Art, Sitari Vasile, Master of Art, Octavian Romanescu, Master of Art, etc., as well as young faculty members whose ideas and innovations resonate strongly among students. Presently, 64 faculty members are active at FAP, of whom 48 are full members of the Union of Plastic Artists of the Republic of Moldova.
The Faculty of Plastic Arts at AMTAP constitutes the backbone of the national school of plastic arts, a laboratory of innovation, diversity, and mobility, a launching pad for young artists—graduates of the faculty—in the creative domain of contemporary national and European art.
Faculty graduates contribute to the development and enrichment of artistic culture in the field of national plastic arts, being competitive also on the international market for cultural products.
Currently, the dean of the Faculty, Mrs. Svetlana Plaținda, is making efforts to mobilize the teaching and student body, to align the study plans with the Bologna process requirements, including recognition of the faculty’s degrees by competent authorities of EU member states.
